With all that’s happening in the world at the moment, it’s perfect timing for a month of comedy. Boasting over 70 shows, The Perth Comedy Festival runs from April 21 to May 18th. Here are my tips for this year.

- Book early. Secure your tickets early things books out really fast.
- Gala nights. Make sure you go to at least one of the Gala nights. They’re absolutely brilliant. Not only do you get to see some well-known talent, it’s a chance to check out the new talent. I’ve often gone on to see their shows after being introduced to them at a Gala. There are three nights this year April 30, May 7 and 14.
- Best of the Fest. A one-hour showcase, hosted two nights a week across the Festival at The Rechabite. You have no idea which local or international stars you’re going to see.
- Variety. It’s not just standup acts there’s also music, magic, circus, check out all the genres.
- International Acts. I always add a couple of international acts to my list. This year I have my eyes on Guy Montgomery, Rhys Darby, Sara Pascoe, Chris Parker.
- Australian talent. As usual the lineup of locally grown talent is vast. Think Tommy Little, Nazeem Hussain, Sammy J, Pete Rowsthorn, Geraldine Hickey to name a few.
- Something new. Try and look beyond the tried and tested. Venture out into an unknown show and sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
- Try a new venue. The main venues of the Astor, Regal and State Theatre are excellent, but have you seen comedy at The Rechabite right in the heart of Northbridge or Freo Social?
- Gift voucher. If you’ve got a birthday or anniversary coming up forget the chocolates and flowers grab a gift voucher.
- Newsletter. This is actually one newsletter you want to sign up for and you’ll hear when new shows are announced.
