The HSBC German Film Festival is back for 2025 with the best contemporary German films direct from major European festivals. plus some from Austria and Switzerland. Here are my tips for this year.

HSBC German Film Festival 2025

Two To One. I was lucky enough to see this film at a preview and I can honestly say it bought some much needed light relief. Based on a true story it’s set in 1990 during the reunification of Germany when East German citizens had four days to exchange their East German Ostmarks for new Deutschmarks. The old currency was about to become worthless. Unbeliveably a group of clever East Germans discover a hidden stash of millions of Ostmarks set to be destroyed by water. Hatching a plan they manage to retrieve bags of cash but what if they could get more than just what they could carry? The film explores family, friendship and the power of community along with larger issues of capitalism and socialism. It will leave you pondering, what would you do if you came across a cave full of money. Rating 6 stars.

Others that sound good are…

Peacock. A few people have already told me about this film. A witty, black comedy about the essence of human relationships, it focuses on a master of his profession, the head of a successful Rent-A-Friend agency, playing any role in any situation his clients desire for a fee. Do you need a “cultured boyfriend” to impress your friends? A “perfect son” to influence your business partners’ opinion of you? Whatever it is, simply rent Matthias. But what happens when he has to be himself?

What Marielle Knows. Here’s a frightening thought, what if your daughter could suddenly read your mind? A well-off young couple find themselves in just that situation when their daughter is able to see and hear everything that they do.

Long Long Short. In an ode to love and friendship this film follows a group of friends across three years as they reunite at various parties. Along the way there are tears, laughter, weddings, separations, children and arguments as they learn about true love, friendship and living life to the fullest.

Hysteria. This film is dubbed a suspenseful behind-the-scenes conspiracy thriller that presents a thought-provoking take on present day German society. On the set of a film production about a real-life 1993 arson incident, a burned Quran is discovered on set by a driver. The film crew is thrown into turmoil. Caught in the crossfire of accusations, 24-year-old intern and second assistant director is drawn into a dangerous game of secrets, lies and paranoia, finding herself at the heart of an all-absorbing conspiracy.

Cicadas. This drama focuses on a high-end real estate agent who has her life all planned out. When her ageing parents need more assistance in their living arrangements she shuttles between Berlin and her parents’ weekend house in a small Brandenburg village. There she meets the enigmatic Anja who destablizes the balance in her life.

Kid Films. As usual there’s a section for the little people too.
