What if you found out your partner had an affair forty years ago? The movie Riviera Revenge considers a delicious reaction.

French general François (André Dussollier) is enjoying his retirement. He has more time to spend with family, especially with his loving wife Annie (Sabine Azéma). Married for five decades life couldn’t be sweeter.
Like most retirees François sets about clearing away the past, starting with the attic. While moving aside large storage boxes a small insignificant box falls to the ground. As he picks it up a letter falls out, followed by several more. Intrigued he opens the first letter.
As the words sink in, he realizes he’s holding a love letter. Skimming to the end he glances a familiar signature. Looking again he acknowledges it’s the penmanship of his wife. His wife is having an affair. Spiraling, he checks the date, forty years prior. Four decades ago. What to do?
With his heart broken and his ego severely dented the former general cannot let it go. And so begins Operation Riviera Revenge. Drawing on his years of experience and key contacts he aims to track down the cad.
As the credits rolled I pondered:
- The movie is a reminder that a broken heart and bruised ego can be a deadly combination at any age;
- It explores the intricacies of family life, long term love, lost love, friendship and loyalty;
- The movie is moving with a good balance of humor;
- As you’d expect the scenery is stunning;
- A good Sunday afternoon or rainy night movie.
