After the disappointment of last year, Sculpture by the Sea Cottesloe is back for its 21st birthday, don’t miss the celebration.

Twenty-one years old, Sculpture by the Sea has definitely come of age. This year sees 70 sculptures dotted across the pristine beach. Along with Australian and local artists there are artists from eight countries including Japan, Denmark, Switzerland, Italy, New Zealand and five artists from India.

Senator Nita Green Assistant Minister for Tourism, The Hon Patrick Gorman MP and The Hon Kate Chaney MP spoke about the events importance at the opening on Friday.

David Handley, Artistic Director and Founding CEO said: “We have been welcomed with extra wide smiles as we set up the sculptures this week with people letting us know how happy they are the exhibition has returned. Thank you to Prime Minister Albanese and Premier Cook for making the exhibition possible for artists from around the world to join local artists in staging one of the largest free to the public cultural events in the world for the people of Perth and its visitors.”

Fremantle-based sculptor Stephen Tepper is the recipient of the $10,000 Alcoa Aluminium Sculpture Award for his sculpture ‘Suddenly Everything’s Changed’.

TWA Invited International Artist, Dr Subodh Kerkar brings something different this year, a performance installation titled ‘Oceans and Civilizations’. One hundred volunteers will take part.

TWA Invited Aboriginal Artist, Karla Hart s participating for the first time with her performance artwork ‘Wardarn Dreaming’.

I’m most excited to announce that this year there will be nine days of beach matting on the sand. Thanks to a Lotterywest grant of $336,079 the matting makes the sculptures accessible for people with reduced mobility or who use wheelchairs to get on the beach between Indiana’s and the groyne from 11 to 19 March.

Sculpture by the Sea, Cottesloe runs until 23 March. Running for two and a half weeks, you have 18 days to check it out. More images will be up on our socials (look for Glennys Marsdon on Facebook and Instagram).
